THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND NATURE PARK OF SANTA MARIA D'AGNANO

An important archaeological site, the Grotta di Santa Maria d'Agnano is an ancient place of worship, just a few kilometres from Ostuni.

About 3 kilometres from Ostuni, the Grotta di Santa Maria d'Agnano is located within the archaeological park of the same name, an area of 13 hectares where important finds have been unearthed.

The cave is a karstic cavity frequented from the Upper Palaeolithic until the second millennium AD, as a place of worship and for daily activities. Particular attention should be paid to the discovery of the Ostuni woman: 'Ostuni 1' is the scientific name given to the skeleton of a 27,000-year-old pregnant woman, found in the Agnano cave together with the remains of a foetus of about 33 weeks' gestation. The mother's body was found in a foetal position, with her left hand under her head and her right hand gently resting on her belly, as if to protect the unborn child. The woman must have been about 20 years old at the time of her death. After the discovery, the skeleton was named 'Delia' and subsequently catalogued with the code 'Ostuni 1'.

According to the findings, the cavity would have been a Messapian sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Demeter, later converted into a place of worship in the Christian era, dedicated to the Madonna d'Agnano: traces of frescoes are still visible, probably dating from the Byzantine period, as well as a small 16th-century chapel with a fresco of the Virgin, the only one remaining of an entire cycle that enriched the church.
