BRIEF NOTES ON ROVINJ

Rovinj is considered by many to be the most beautiful town on the Istrian coast. In the summer it is often overrun by tourists, and the locals have become very adept at taking advantage of the large influx of visitors, renovating hotels and restaurants to four-star status. Despite this, its charm has remained intact, not least because Rovinj is one of the last fishing ports on the Mediterranean that can still be called authentic. Early in the morning you can see the fishermen unloading their catch from their boats under the watchful eye of flocks of chattering seagulls and, before lunchtime, mending their nets. And to ensure that the fishing is plentiful, prayers are still said in the imposing Church of St Euphemia, whose 60-metre-high bell tower dominates the peninsula's skyline.

Surrounded by lush wooded hills and a few-storey hotels, the old town of Rovinj is characterised by steep cobbled streets and squares. Off the coast are the 14 islands of the Rovinj Archipelago, which can make for an ideal afternoon excursion, the most popular being Crveni Otok (Red Island), Sveta Katarina and Sveti Andrija.

 

The old town coincides with an oval-shaped peninsula. About 1.5 km to the south is the Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape) forest park and the wooded promontory of Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape), where there are several large hotels set in a forest of oak and pine trees. Rovinj boasts two harbours, an open one to the north of the peninsula and a small, sheltered one to the south.
