TERRITORIAL CONTEXT


Di impianto medievale, il centro storico di Ceglie Messapica è un unicum ambientale-architettonico di notevole interesse pubblico sottoposto a vincolo paesaggistico dal 1999. Il tessuto urbano è dominato dal castello ducale e dalla collegiata attorno a cui si dipana una fitta rete di viuzze strette e tortuose e di scalinate lastricate con le caratteristiche “chianche” dove si aprono spiazzi come piazza Vecchia. Sui vicoli si affacciano le casine scialbate con latte di calce con i loro balconi fioriti e le finestre con quattro piedritti sporgenti agli angoli.

Incastonata nella parte meridionale dell’altopiano delle Murge, tra la Valle d’Itria e il Salento, Ceglie Messapica sorge a 35 chilometri da Brindisi. 

Su di un colle si erge il castello ducale accanto al quale svetta la torre normanna. Per volere della famiglia Sanseverino, il maniero acquisì nel XV secolo le fattezze di una dimora nobiliare tempestata di vessilli gentilizi e affreschi.

Nel centro storico, le architetture dei palazzi svelano l’anima signorile di Ceglie: dal settecentesco Palazzo Allegretti che, affacciato su piazza Vecchia, ospita la Pinacoteca Emilio Notte e la biblioteca comunale, a Palazzo Epifani, a ridosso del castello, fino al bugnato di Palazzo Vitale.

Consacrata all’Assunta, la Collegiata è sorta sulle vestigia della vecchia acropoli, per poi indossare una veste barocca nel ’700.

Di origine messapica, Ceglie è circondata da terrazzamenti ricchi di trulli e muretti a secco mentre un trionfo di stalattiti e stalagmiti drappeggia le Grotte di Montevicoli, a un chilometro dal centro abitato.
