SAN VITO DEI NORMANNI

Situato nella parte centro-meridionale della provincia di Brindisi, nell'area settentrionale del Salento a 9 chilometri dalla costa adriatica , ad un'altitudine di circa 100 m. s. l. m.
Città di origine medievale benché ci siano stati ritrovamenti di età messapica e romana non molto distanti dall'attuale centro storico. Secondo alcuni studiosi la fondazione della città avvenne ad opera degli Schiavoni (popolazione slava proveniente dall'altra sponda dell'Adriatico) sul finire del X secolo, per altri studiosi, invece, a fondarla furono i Normanni (XI - XII secolo) ed in particolare Boemondo d'Altavilla (1050 – 1111) che avrebbe fatto costruire la Torre quadrata attorno alla quale venne poi costruito il castello feudale. Il paese ha avuto nel corso dei secoli come nome quello di San Vito degli Schiavi o Schiavoni o solo San Vito o anche San Vito in Terra d'Otranto.
