Immerso negli uliveti secolari punteggiati dai trulli, San Michele Salentino delizia i visitatori con il sapore autentico dei fichi mandorlati.

Sorto appena due secoli fa attorno ad una masseria settecentesca appartenuta ai principi Dentice di Frasso, San Michele Salentino sorge nella Valle d'Itria, a 30 km da Brindisi.

Nel centro storico, la piccola Matrice realizzata tra il 1876 e il 1882 si affaccia su piazza Dante. Poco distante, nei pressi di piazza Marconi, spicca la moderna e luminosa Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo realizzata nel 1935.

Più avanti si può far visita alla Pinacoteca comunale intitolata a Salvatore Cavallo e, dopo qualche passo, ci si ritrova nel verde della villa comunale.

In realtà il cuore antico del paese pulsa a un chilometro di distanza dall’abitato, è Borgo Ajeni che fa da scenografia a sagre paesane e presepi viventi.

In Contrada Augeluzzi, tra gli uliveti punteggiati dai caratteristici trulli, si apre l’omonima grotta risalente al Paleolitico Medio, testimone della presenza Neandertaliana.

San Michele, inoltre, è celebre per un singolare primato: in Europa è la città con il più alto rapporto tra concessionarie d’auto e abitanti.
