Situata nella Val d’Itria tra verde vegetazione della macchia mediterranea, Martina Franca è un grazioso borgo pugliese che è riuscito a mantenere intatto il suo fascino senza tempo. Il centro storico della cittadina sorge su un’altura a 400 metri d’altitudine e camminare per le sue stradine è come visitare un museo a cielo aperto. Numerosi ritrovamenti, risalenti all’epoca preistorica, dimostrano come questa terra fosse già abitata in periodi davvero antichi anche se è solo nel X secolo che alcuni cittadini di Taranto, scappati dalla città a causa delle numerose incursioni dei pirati, fondarono sul Monte di San Martino un piccolo villaggio. L’origine del nome Martina deriva dalla devozione degli abitanti per San Martino di Tours, mentre il termine Franca fu aggiunto attorno al XIV secolo quando la città fu eletta comune da Filippo I d’Angiò che concesse ai cittadini particolari privilegi come le franchigie e la demanialità perpetua. Il XVIII secolo è un’epoca di grande sviluppo per questa località grazie alla costruzione di edifici, monumenti e chiese in un particolare stile barocco che prende il nome di “barocco martinese”. Attualmente Martina Franca è una graziosa cittadina dell’entroterra pugliese che vanta non solo un centro storico ricco di chiese e palazzi di grande pregio ma anche un patrimonio ricco di tradizioni culturali e agroalimentari.
